코스프레: 그것은 일본에서 어떻게 다른가?

In North America, during conventions, cosplayers wear their dress onstage and perform a part from an animated film. In front of spectators, they perform humorous but not necessarily the exact routines of their chosen character. In Japan, cosplayers also wear their dress onstage; however, they usually give only a static display, such as striking their character’s signature pose or reciting the motto of their chosen character. Another difference is where cosplay dress is worn. In North America, cosplayers wear their dress in nearly any setting. For example, fully costumed cosplayers may leave the designated area and eat at a nearby restaurant. In Japan, cosplayers are not welcome in some areas beyond the convention, and some conventions request that cosplayers not wear their dress outside the convention.

Since Japanese culture values community above the individual, cosplayers exist as a subculture, outside the acceptable norms of the mainstream culture, where acts of discrimination have occurred by the dominant culture. As a result, Japanese cosplayers have a negative reputation as individualists. In Japan, unlike North America, there are areas, such as the Akihabara and Harajuku districts in Tokyo, dedicated to cosplay costume shops, cafes, and restaurants.

 

북미에서는 대회 동안, 코스프레를 하는 사람들이 옷을 입고 무대에 오르고 만화 영화의 한 부분을 공연한다. 관중 앞에서, 그들은 자신들이 고른 등장인물의 유머러스하지만 반드시 정확한 루틴은 아닌 것을 연기한다. 일본에서도 코스프레를 하는 사람들이 옷을 입고 무대에 오른다. 그러나, 그들은 대체로 그 등장인물의 전형적인 포즈를 취하거나 자신들이 고른 등장인물의 모토를 암송하는 것과 같은 고정된 표현만 한다. 또 다른 차이점은 코스프레 옷을 입는 장소이다. 북미에서, 코스프레를 하는 사람들은 자신의 옷을 거의 어떤 장소에서나 입는다. 예를 들어, 완전히 차려입은 코스프레를 하는 사람들이 지정된 장소를 떠나 근처의 음식점에서 음식을 먹을 수 있다. 일본에서, 코스프레를 하는 사람들은 대회 밖의 몇몇 장소에서 환영받지 못하고 몇몇 대회에서는 코스프레를 하는 사람들이 대회 밖에서는 옷을 입지 말라고 요청한다.

일본 문화가 개인보다는 공동체를 더 중요하게 여기므로, 코스프레를 하는 사람들은 주류 문화에서 받아들일 수 있는 규범 밖의 하위문화로 존재하고, 그곳에서는 지배적 문화에 의한 차별 행위가 발생해왔다. 결과적으로, 일본의 코스프레를 하는 사람들은 개인주의자들로 부정적인 평판을 갖는다. 북미와는 달리, 일본에서는 도쿄의 아키하바라와 하라주쿠 지역처럼 코스프레 의상점, 카페, 음식점을 위해 전적으로 사용되는 지역이 있다.
